Penfolds wrote: First planted in the mid 1880s, Block 42 comprises the oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vines in Australia and, for that matter, the world. Block 42 is a remarkable piece of viticultural dirt which has contributed very useful, if not essential, blending material for both Grange and Bin 707. During the 1970s and 1980s no Block 42 Kalimna Cabernet was made. The 1996 South Australian vintage, however, was generally exceptional, allowing for the option of making a single Block 42 wine once again. The sheer quality and balance of the Cabernet fruit harvested across all contributing regions in that vintage, allowed both a Bin 707 and a separate Block 42 to be vinified in 1996. Robert Parker wrote: The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Block 42 Kalimna is produced from some of the finest parcels Penfolds owns in their Kalimna and Koonunga Hill vineyards in the Barossa Valley, and their Block 20 vineyard in Coonawarra. There are only and I say only 550 cases of this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, so it would be a true collectors item for many years to come. The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Block 42 Kalimna (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) spent 13 months in 100% new 300 liters American hogsheads. The result is an opaque purple-coloured Cabernet displaying a gorgeously intense perfume of graphite, acacia flowers, black truffles, blueberries, blackberries and damp earth. It is rich, voluptuous, seamless, full-bodied, and opulent, with amazing intensity as well as high tannin levels. The latter component is largely concealed by a sensationel cascade of fruit and glycerin. This remarkable wine shold age gracefully for 20-25 years.
