L'Instant, Paris, 1986, First Edition. Paudras' memoir/biography of Powell is aesthetically a worthy successor to his definitive graphic study of Charlie Parker, To Bird With Love, published in 1981. In the original French, handsomely designed, lavishly illustrated with vintage b&w photographs and ephemera, the author draws heavily on his close personal relationship with the great pianist, to whom he was extraordinarily devoted, and for whom he acted as de facto guardian and unofficial manager during Powell's troubled stay in Paris during the late 50's and early 60's. The award winning French film, Round Midnight, also released in 1986, directed by Bernard Tavernier and starring Dexter Gordon, presented a thinly disguised fictional account of a doomed expatriate jazz musician in Paris in the 50's. A composite portrait based loosely on the lives of Powell and the great tenor saxophonist Lester Young, the film borrowed substantially from Paudras' book and featured a young 'guardian' figure named "Francis". Large folio in white boards, title blind stamped to top cover, touch of shelf wear to bottom edges, fore corners gently bumped, spine ends slightly creased and compressed, else, near fine, crisp, unmarked; in a very good+ dust jacket, unclipped, closed tears to edges of front panel light, wear to fore corners, and top of spine, mild edge curling to panels, now in mylar sleeve. Lovely book, increasingly uncommon
