Andet, RE 661 ISDN Layer 2 Decoder
The RE661 works with a ISDN using standalone ISDN terminal adaptor, or on a digital landline such as a BT Kilostream. 64 or 128kbps. 24, 32 or 48ksamples/s. Mono, joint stereo, or dual mono. However, an unusual feature (nowadays) of the RE661 is the option to run on its own sync timing for use down two dry pairs (with ISDN and Kilostream the timing is supplied to the encoder by the telco network). Another unusual feature is that the two X.21 ports are the wrong sex (male instead of female) which is a pain in the socket when you want to swap with another make/model! The decoder version was the BE661.
The BE663 is the decoder to go with the BE662 encoder (can you see a model number pattern emerging here?) but will work with a BE660 up to 128kbps or with any other LII encoder. It has a built-in ISDN TA which can be used with up to three ISDN lines (ie, up to six concurrent ISDN calls) using the three S bus ports - providing up to 384kbps, or up to the same limit with digital landlines using one or both of the X.21 ports (correct sex this time!).
